In the memory of Academician Nikolai Nikolaevich Bambalov

In memory of Academician Nikolai Nikolaevich Bambalov (1938-2020)

On June 2, 2020, Nikolai Bambalov, Chief researcher of the Institute of Nature Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Nikolai Bambalov, Academician, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, professor, a well-known scientist in the field of geochemistry and ecology of soils and swamps, suddenly passed away.

N. N. Bambalov was born on June 3, 1938 in Shatalovo, Smolensk Region (Russia).

In 1961, he graduated from the Belarusian Agricultural Academy. He started his career as a junior researcher, worked as a senior engineer, senior researcher, head of the laboratory of the Institute of Peat of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, and since 1976, head of the laboratory of the Institute of Problems of Natural Resources Use and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The entire life path of Nikolai Nikolaevich Bambalov was devoted to the study of swamps. He established: general patterns of mineralization and transformation of soil organic matter, revealed the relationship between the ecological conditions of soil formation, chemical composition, molecular structure of organic compounds and the rate of their mineralization; features of the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen in soils and swamps. N. N. Bambalov proved that swamps serve as a transitional link between the biogenic and geological cycles of these elements.

Academician N. N. Bambalov has published more than 150 scientific papers, including 4 monographs, and is the author of 14 inventions. The staff of the ISEI BSU is grieving over the death of Nikolai Bambalov and expresses its deep condolences to his family and friends.
