On May 21, 2020, the 20th anniversary International Scientific Conference “Sakharov Readings 2020: Environmental Problems of the XXI Century” was opened at the ISEI BSU. More than 240 participants from 13 countries of the near and far abroad gathered at the scientific forum, where it is planned to discuss the most relevant problems for the world community: the quality of environmental safety, the state of the environment and its impact, bioethical problems of human nature research.

The organizers of the conference in 2020 were: the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, the Public Council of the Basic Organization for Environmental Education of the CIS Countries, the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Basic Research, the Belarusian State University, the International Sakharov Environmental Institute of the Belarusian State University.

The conference is held in the usual online format for today.
The scientific community was congratulated on the beginning of the conference: by means of a video message – the rector of the Belarusian State University Andrey Dmitrievich Korol; the First Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus Boleslav Kazimirovich Pirshtuk, who was present at the opening ceremony of the conference at the ISEI BSU.

The speaker of the plenary session was Sergey Maskevich, Director of the ISEI BSU.
Presentations at the plenary session of the conference were made by: Alexander Korbut, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, topic of the report “State Policy of the Republic of Belarus in the field of waste management”; Sergey Lysenko, Director of the Institute of Nature Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, topic of the report “Natural and anthropogenic climate measurements and their impact on the environment and living conditions of the population of the Republic of Belarus”; Harig Michael, Chairman of the Bautzen District Administration, (Federal Republic of Germany), topic of the report “Bautzen district in the area of the conflict between the current corona pandemic and the planned coal withdrawal for decades”; Igor Tarutin, representing the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Oncology and Medical Radiology named after N. N. Alexandrov, topic of the report “Prospects for training medical physicists in the Republic of Belarus”; Tyutyunnikov Sergey Ivanovich, representing the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russian Federation), topic of the report “Application of high charged particle accelerators for energy production and transmutation in subcritical systems”; Frontasyeva Marina Vladimirovna, representing the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, (Dubna, Russian Federation), topic of the report “Andrey Sakharov is a great scientist and citizen”; Anastasia Kosova, representing the Republican Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health, (Minsk), topic of the report “Social and hygienic monitoring and its role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”; Alexander Parfenov, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Belarusian NPP, topic of the report “Belarusian NPP: safety aspects”; Alexander Lukashenko, representing the All-Russian Research Institute of Radiology and Agroecology, (Obninsk, Russian Federation), the topic of the report “Study of the distribution of tritium among the components of an ecosystem with an underground source of tritium” (comments on the presentation of the report were made by Anna Ivanovna Kyivitskaya, Head of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the ISEI BSU).

The plenary session was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the ISEI BSU.

In the afternoon, the participants of the online conference continued their work in breakout sessions in the following areas:
- Socio-environmental problems of sustainable development: global threats, challenges and opportunities. Within the framework of this section, the work of the round table on bioethics was carried out.
- Environmental education for sustainable development.
- Study and rehabilitation of ecosystems, environmental monitoring and management.
- Nuclear and radiation safety.
- Medicine and ecology.
- Modern methods and means of biomedical diagnostics.
- Information systems and technologies.
- Industrial ecology.
As part of the traditional conference “Sakharov Readings: Environmental Problems of the XXI Century”, the program always included a poster section. This year, having changed the format of the conference, the organizing committee did not ignore the poster presentations, they are posted in electronic form on the conference website http://reading.iseu.bsu.by/ in the “Posters” section.
