The International Sakharov Environmental Institute of the Belarusian State University (BSU) is an institution of higher education with the rights of a legal entity of the BSU complex.
The Institute has a branch in Yerevan (Republic of Armenia), it trains environmental specialists at the joint faculty of the ISEI BSU and the Tajik National University (Republic of Tajikistan) and is the basic organization of the CIS member states for environmental education. Over the past 10 years, together with higher education institutions of the Republic of Belarus and educational institutions of the near and far abroad, it has been developing a scientific, methodological and informational base to support continuous environmental education.
The faculty of environmental monitoring and the faculty of environmental medicine of the Institute train specialists in the first and second stages of higher education for the Republic of Belarus and other countries. There is a faculty of retraining and advanced training. The Institute cooperates with the IAEA in the field of training and retraining of personnel in nuclear and radiation safety, and is a co-executor of the State program for training personnel for nuclear energy. The educational process is provided by qualified teaching staff of more than 200 employees. We train highly qualified personnel in postgraduate and doctoral studies.
The Institute is accredited as a scientific organization and publishes the scientific journal “Ecological Bulletin”. The Central research problem remains the study of the influence of anthropogenic factors on the evolution of the biosphere, as well as the impact of the environment on human health and biodiversity of plants and animals. The presence of highly qualified teaching staff, modern educational and scientific laboratory facilities, as well as close ties in solving various educational and scientific projects with the faculties and departments of BSU allow the Institute to provide a high level of education and research. Cooperation with NAS Institutes and scientific and practical centers of the Ministry of health and the Ministry of natural resources plays an important role in ensuring scientific and educational activities.
Since 2001, the Institute has initiated an annual International scientific conference dedicated to the memory of academician A. D. Sakharov. The main goal of the conference is to bring together leading scientists and practitioners, postgraduates, undergraduates and students from many countries in their task to understand and minimize the impact of technological progress on the environment and humans.
The Institute pays special attention to the development of international relations within the framework of bilateral and multilateral agreements and consortia, the organization of students’ practices abroad. An important role in the life of the Institute and the development of international relations is played by the international Board of Trustees, consisting of famous scientists from 8 countries, and the UNESCO chair.
Students demonstrate high social activity by participating in their own projects, youth projects of BSU, Minsk and the Republic. The BSU campus provides places in comfortable dormitories for all first-year students.
