Major «General Bioinformatics »

 

Students study • Biology;

• Informatics;

• Information Engineering;

• Programming;

• Mathematics and Statistics to analyze and interpret biological data;

Students undergo two week research training during the studies. Training based on research institutions of the national Academy of the Republic of Belarus, IT-companies dealing with the analysis of medical and biological data. 

The opportunity to study the following additional disciplines: 

“Philosophy and methodological science”, “Foreign language”, “Fundamentals of information technologies” followed by a candidate’s examination and a credit necessary to enter a postgraduate course.

Graduates • able to carry out the decryption and comparative analysis of genomes and other genetic information, quality and quantity assessment of protein synthesis level, variety of lipids and metabolites due to phenotypic signs of the organism;

• spatial structure modeling of biopolymers and their conformational dynamics;

• writing scripts in popular programming languages of the bioinformatics research field, application development and library use designed for Science Software in biological research.

Requirements completed higher education (bachelor’s degree);

• successfully pass the interview both on language proficiency (English or Russian) and profile disciplines.

Description of study Period of study: September 1 – June 30. There are 2 week holidays between semesters in winter. Students defend a master’s thesis in the 2nd semester.

Graduate competencies • apply methods of scientific knowledge on your own research activity, generate and implement innovation ideas;

• solve research and innovation tasks based on the application of information technologies;

• have an appropriate command of a foreign language to communicate in academic, research, professional spheres to implement research and innovation activity;

• apply a systematic approach to analyze large sets of biological data, use pattern information processes in biological systems, apply bioinformatics methods to solve exact research tasks;

• solve typical bioinformatics task, use in professional activity the methods of structural bioinformatics and molecular modeling, synthesis, biopolymer research;

• process statistical biological data, systemize the results of the work performed using modern computer technology and data analysis methods.
